Lake Montessori

Lake Montessori is where my passion for school gardens all began. My children attended this school and together, we established a school garden program that continues to this day.

What began as one patch of garden space has now blossomed to several gardens across the campus. Middle school is starting a spring garden…

Elementary students have gardens using recycled wood pallets and discarded shelves. Talk about recycling–these kids are on it!

They use old barrels, too. The perfect example of container gardening!

The pond they constructed not only serves to teach science and environment, it also acts as a retreat for students seeking a quiet space.

At this school, all ages get involved. Some of the younger students are starting marigold seeds outside of their classroom that will be transplanted across the school grounds.

Not only will they beautify the area, they will also act as natural insect repellent. Win-win!

Speaking of winning, this spring, these students decided to EXPAND their school garden. Awesome! Better yet, you have students teaching students–a tenet of Montessori learning.

Then of course, there’s harvest time, open to all ages.

Those are some happy students. And well fed. I can’t wait until fall gardening!
