With a grant courtesy of the USDA Food and Nutrition Services, the students of Lake Panasoffkee Elementary continue to do AMAZING work in their garden. Recently, they added even more towers to their collection!
That will add a ton more produce which they can share with fellow students.
Wow–I think the students enjoyed adding fresh student-grown produce to their lunch. By the look on this young lady’s face, I do believe she’s a fan!!
In addition to lettuce, the students grew a variety of produce, from cauliflower to squash and a bunch in between!
They hung their basil in the office to dry and allowed their lettuce to “go to seed” enabling them to harvest seeds from this year’s harvest to start next season’s harvest. Sustainability 101.
Tower gardening and traditional soil gardening provide the medium for a variety of plants, but soil is the only way the kids can grow “root” vegetables like carrots, beets, onions and potatoes.
Gorgeous kale is overflowing from the towers, soon to be followed by overflowing raised beds. The 2nd graders took the lead and planted potatoes, carrots, sugar snap peas, carrots, beets, radish, cabbage, lettuce, and kale–all cool weather plants.
Important, as we still might face from chilly temps here in Florida. Excellent start to the season, kids! Stay-tuned to follow our progress.
Oh, how their garden has grown! Isn’t it gorgeous? Kale, potatoes, radish, scallions, beets, carrots, peas–oh my!
Plus, they have hydroponic towers to tend, making these students totally expert gardeners.
From pinching tomatoes on their towers, to hunting bugs and inspecting plants in their raised beds, these kids are on duty and doing a fabulous job.
They’re also hilling their potatoes for an increased bounty, come harvest time. Important, as they’ll be participating in our school garden farmer’s market.
What do you do with a bounty of produce? Why, you take it to the market, of course!
These gardeners sold out in less than two hours, earning a bunch of money to sustain and grow their school garden.
We definitely have some budding sales people and future business owners in this group. They did an AWESOME job!
