Welcome to the Villages Elementary School Garden! Students are super-excited to dig into their BRAND NEW school garden, conveniently located right outside the windows of their cafeteria.
Thanks to the support of our wonderful local business, Black Kow, these kids are now ready to get planting in their super-rich and nutritious soil. A combination of composted cow manure and bedding mix, these kids will reap the benefits of healthy fruits and vegetables. With their garden located just outside the cafeteria windows, the connection to what the students are growing and what they’re eating could not be more clear. (Or delicious!)
Their goal? Bring the produce grown in the school garden to the cafeteria line where all of the students can enjoy the “fruits” of their labor. Talk about local. It doesn’t get any closer. The excitement was palpable. Hip, hip, hurray!
Time for planting, the list of cool season vegetables is long, including lettuce, mustard, beets, radish, turnips, broccoli, cauliflower, scallions and the beloved sugar snap peas. So tasty!
And once they’ve planted, it’s time to water.
Can’t wait to watch them grow!

Speaking of grow… Look at those beautiful plants! Are these young gardeners experts, or what?

So beautiful and healthy, too. Broccoli and Bok Choy make for great “companions” in the garden and on the lunch plate.

Located just outside the cafeteria windows, these students are beginning to make the connection between the plants they’re growing and the food they eat. More than five years later and they’re still growing strong. Well done!
