Why we do it
School gardens are important because they help kids grow. Whether focused on fruits and vegetables, native plants or wildlife, school gardens provide hands-on learning in a variety of subjects, including science, math, social studies, language arts, nutrition and the environment. The connection to nature students make through tending plants has been shown to improve test scores, behavioral problems, and emotional issues. Moreover, tasting and learning to prepare the food they grow helps kids develop healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime. At a time when childhood obesity and diabetes are on the rise, this is more important than ever.
The key to success is providing schools with the resources and assistance they need to get started and sustain their gardens. To this end, The BloominThyme Collaborative is focused on providing a schoolyard garden, hands-on training, curriculum aligned to national standards, tools and supplies, plus strategies for summer garden maintenance. By working together, we can share ideas, influence outcomes, and improve the quality of life for all involved.
If you are trying to gain support for a school garden, a workshop or presentation by a member of The BloominThyme Collaborative team can help inspire staff, parents, administrators, and school board members. Together, we can leverage our combined resources and reach underserved communities helping all participants lead more active and fulfilling lives.
